Subject: Please take bold action to support WA students

Message:

Students like me are the future computer scientists, educators, engineers, medical assistants, and social workers of our communities. Many of us rely on financial aid and scholarships, as well as academic advising and other resources to navigate post-high school education. What’s more, Washington’s economy depends on a workforce of people who complete a credential after high school. But did you know that enrollment in Washington colleges and universities has declined? Fall 2020 postsecondary enrollment in Washington dropped 13 percent compared to the previous year, which is twice the national rate of about 7 percent. The need is urgent. Please take bold action this legislative session to ensure students like me have the opportunity to earn a credential or degree and succeed in tomorrow’s workforce. Please prioritize strategies to: - Expand the Washington College Grant by increasing income eligibility and growing the award amount. - Encourage students to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by funding student navigators and allowing families that have already verified their income through other state aid programs to automatically enroll in the Washington College Grant. - Enable more students to qualify for the College Bound scholarship program. - Build regional partnerships between education and community partners – based on successful models in Seattle and Lewis County – to provide targeted, thoughtful, and direct outreach to students. Your support can get thousands more students per year – particularly students of color and students from low-income backgrounds – through the post-high school education door! Thank you for championing our students and our state!
