We are expecting almost 4 million more people to move to the Pacific Northwest by 2050. If we don’t act now to accommodate this growth, our current problems – traffic congestion, housing affordability and increasing climate change — will only get worse. One solution to help address these problems is creating high speed transportation options in our region. Fast, high-capacity transportation options to help connect Vancouver B.C. to Seattle and Portland (and beyond) will give workers better choices about where to work and live. For more than five years, the States of Oregon and Washington, along with the Province of British Columbia, have been collaborating on a vision of ultra-high-speed ground transportation in the Cascadia region. The Washington Legislature has helped fund studies that demonstrated that it’s feasible to build a project like this in our region and in 2022 approved $150 million as a state match for federal funds. Other regions of the country are developing high speed rail corridors. Cascadia has taken the critical first steps, but additional state support is needed to advance this project. Funding to establish a coordinating entity for the project and begin outreach along the proposed corridor are key next steps. The development of ultra-high-speed ground transportation will unleash the full potential of Cascadia businesses and other innovators, strategically address the concerns that can otherwise arise from continued growth, and improve the quality of life for the region’s residents. This project represents a future of robust mobility, equitable access to opportunity, good jobs, and a safe, sustainable environment. Please urge the U.S. Department of Transportation to approve the Washington State Department of Transportation’s application for funding Cascadia high‐speed rail through the Federal Railroad Administration Federal‐State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Program, and concurrent application for funding through the Corridor Identification and Development Program.
