Subject: So many policy wins for WA students…thank you!

Message:

Thank you for passing new policies and investments during the 2024 legislative session that will better enable students to complete a post-high school credential! Your work on several issues will help more students succeed in our state’s workforce, including: - Easier access to financial aid: Students who are recipients of the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), known in Washington as Basic Food, will be automatically eligible for the WA Grant without filling out a financial aid application. The new law will enable more than 30,000 students to access the WA Grant more easily. Students can receive state financial aid for up to six years to finish their studies, instead of the previous five years, in alignment with federal Pell Grant availability. - Improved outreach to students: - New information-sharing requirements between state agencies and postsecondary institutions will enable better outreach to students about post-high school education and training opportunities, financial aid, and more. - Reduced barriers to enrolling in postsecondary education: The work-study salary matching requirement is eliminated for public, nonprofit, and community service employers, encouraging them to hire more students for valuable, paid work experience, and smoothing high school students’ enrollment in postsecondary education. - Earning college credit in high school: High school students will have costs covered for College in the High School courses at select private, four-year, not-for-profit institutions through a new pilot initiative. Washington employers continue to create jobs. More than ever, these jobs are being filled by people who have education and training beyond high school, such as a degree, apprenticeship, industry-aligned certificate or license. This session, you and your colleagues once again came together to prioritize students’ access to financial aid and post-high school education and training opportunities. Thank you for supporting new policies and investments that will better prepare Washington students for the career opportunities in our state!
